Growth in Korean Online Casinos Gambling
Two in-game traders may just have to cough up the more than $8,000 in fines even
though the gamblers claim their form of trading is not technically illegal
according to regulations published by the Ministry of Culture more than a year
ago. Korea has restrictions in place against online casinos poker gambling and
other forms of entertainment that constitute gambling. But the two in-game
traders claim that their activities are quite dissimilar to online casinos
gambling and they should not have to pay the fines.
The essence of the situation comes down to the fact that two gamers profited
more than $20,000 for selling cyber money for real money. While this is slightly
different from online casinos and poker gambling, the judge ruled that the money
made from in-game trading was large enough to be classified as illegal. Judge
Kim Jong-Soo ruled, “The two purchased numerous cyber game items used in Lineage
between May and July of last year at ten percent below street prices through
game item trading websites and made more than $20,142 in profit by reselling
them.”
But the two gamblers feel that they are stuck in the middle of unclear policy
released by the Ministry of Culture. They acted in a way that is not explicitly
included in the online casino gambling restrictions. One of the two victims
facing thousands of dollars in fines commented, “We are victims of contradictory
policies on gambling.” And even though the two accused are appealing the ruling
and requesting a provincial court hearing, chances are the Ministry will use
this opportunity to clarify policies on internet gambling activities. |
