The European Commission is responsible for ensuring that all of the 27 member
nations are in compliance with EU policies and principles. The latest issue that
has occupied the Commission centers on the online casinos gambling industry in
various nations. Although the majority of the EU members have free and open
internet gambling markets, there are still nearly a dozen nations that are not
in full compliance because of legislation and attempts to protect state-run
online casinos gambling monopolies. Commissioner Charlie McCreevy has
aggressively pursued these nations with talks, negotiations, requests and more,
and unfortunately there are still several nations that refuse to comply with EU
policies regarding the online gambling industry.
Commissioner McCreevy has issued warnings now to the several nations adamant
that they will continue operating state-run online casinos gambling monopolies.
Germany even went so far as to pass new restrictive legislation while in the
negotiations with the Commission. There are naturally a handful of nations in
talks and working with the Commission to find a way to comply with EU trade
policies while still opening up the national betting and gambling markets to
foreign competitors.
For those countries that are refusing to come to terms with the Commission
regarding new legislation and the liberalization of the online casinos gambling
market, Commissioner McCreevy has remarked that those countries may very well
find themselves brought up before the European Court of Justice on the grounds
of non-compliance. McCreevy remarked, "We have a dialogue going on with some
member states... but for those where we cannot reach agreement we will proceed
to the European Court of justice." The coming months will show just which
countries are in looking to come into online gambling compliance and those that
will likely face court time. |
