Oh the Online Casinos Hypocrisy
The proposed gambling regulations have a lot of elements that have caused
controversy in the United States and in international online casinos gambling
industry. Last week’s Congressional hearing was organized as a venue for many to
voice these concerns over the direction of the U.S. internet gambling industry.
What cropped up though, in addition to the debate was a valid question – what do
the politicians have against online casinos and poker gambling in particular?
The UIGEA is largely hypocritical because it allows for certain types of
internet gambling – even encourages the growth of these industries, yet attempts
to completely block online casinos gambling.
There are only hairline distinctions between the various sectors of the internet
gambling industry, and the U.S. allows various forms of internet gambling while
blatantly blocking online casinos gambling for no apparent reason. The
interesting part about the crafting of the UIGEA, a “rather bizarre piece of
legislation” notes Congressman Frank, is that the UGIEA drafters wholly support
forms of land and internet gambling, going so far as to encourage online
lotteries, internet-based Fantasy Sports Leagues, and horserace gambling at the
state level. And in regards to the special carve-outs for horserace gambling,
Frank observes, “I thought it was gambling; perhaps it’s animal husbandry.”
It just begs the question, Why? Why is online casinos gambling singled out – the
UIGEA certainly doesn’t give reasons and the UIGEA drafters couldn’t even really
pinpoint and define internet gambling, yet they have banned the activity from
the U.S. Presidential Candidate Ron Paul noted the dangers of the UIGEA on
further regulation of the internet if it remains in effect. He notes, I've
always been concerned about this type of regulation and legislation - it's
likely to open the door [to the control and regulation] of the Internet itself.”
This sort of hypocritical and unclear legislation has the potential to usher in
a wave of protectionist internet related regulations – a definite danger in the
land of freedom of speech and expression. |
