Frank's Letter of Expectation
Congressman Barney Frank is a U.S. Congressman who is good to have on your side
– he is one of the online casinos and poker industry’s strongest allies at this
point and is pioneering efforts to educate U.S. politicians on the intensely
negative effects of the 2006 UIGEA. The UIGEA banned banks and financial
institutions from processing online casinos gambling transactions with offshore
and foreign internet gambling operators. And beyond efforts to neutralize the
UIGEA, now Frank and Congressman Ron Paul are working together to force the U.S.
Trade Representatives to release details of trade concession agreements with
several other nations affected by the UIGEA.
The two Congressman released the letter they sent to the Schwab’s office, which
detailed not only expectations for additional information on why the trade
concessions are protected as a matter of national security, but a belief that
Schwab is using the “national security” tactic as a way to avoid international
scrutiny. The U.S.’s online casinos issue is a sticky debate all over the world,
and the letter remarks, “If this is merely an attempt to avoid revealing the
cost of these trade concessions, either because they would be viewed too costly
by the United States or not costly enough by the negotiating countries, this
Freedom of Information Act denial on the grounds of ‘national security’ would
appear to be a misuse of the FOIA process.”
This is the attitude that many online casinos industry analysts have taken; most
doubt that the national security claims are in fact legitimate. Frank and Ron
Paul conclude the letter with assertions that the withdrawal of GATS commitments
“was a mistake, because it is in furtherance of a policy - the UIGEA - which is
an inappropriate interference with the personal freedoms of American citizens
that we are working to undo." There is every likelihood that Congressman Frank
and other politicians will succeed in reversing the UIGEA and instead licensing
and regulating online gambling in the country. |
