Demands for Justification
The United States Trade Representatives are holding strong that the trade
concession agreements with the European Union, Japan, and Canada are in fact
protected from public release on the grounds that they are protected for
national security purposes. An independent freelance journalist first uncovered
the problem when requesting a breakdown of the trade concessions that the U.S.
made as a way to continue banning offshore online casinos gambling activities.
After being denied the details of the trade concessions, two prominent
Congressmen are now following up on the issue and are demanding that Susan C.
Schwab’s office release the details of the trade concessions or at minimum fully
justify what in the concessions constitutes protection for “national security
purposes.”
The USTR negotiated compensation deals through the World Trade Organisation
(WTO) with several countries as a way to alter online casino gambling
commitments in the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) treaty.
Congressman Barney Frank though, teamed up with Ron Paul, is certain to bring
resolution to this issue. Frank is a prominent political figure in the ongoing
fight to repeal or neutralize the controversial UIGEA which bans online casinos
gambling transactions in the U.S. with offshore and foreign gambling operators.
The two Congressmen are aggressively pursing a response from the USTR regarding
why the online casinos gambling trade compensations are classified information.
A letter to Schwab from the Congressmen addresses the USTR’s national security
claim, “We find this unacceptable. If, in fact, there were some additional trade
concessions that were made that do have national security implications, we
request a secure briefing on those issues.”
The U.S. government is facing heat over the online casinos gambling issue on
many levels. Not only are the USTR actions under criticism, but the Congress
held a hearing just last week to discuss the UIGEA and the international
implications of continuing a block on internet gambling. |
