Unenforceable Credits
Gambling in the land and online casino gambling industries can have some serious
drawbacks – and in this case it’s for the venue and not the gamblers himself.
The Aspinall land casino in London launched a case several months ago targeting
a Syrian high-stakes gambler who frequented the land venue but failed to pay on
a $2 million check. The case has made headlines because it shows that although
the land and online casinos are often considered the bad guys in many lawsuits
there are some questionable circumstances.
The case gets complicated but basically the information shows that the Syrian
gambler, Fouad al-Zayat, wrote a check for $2 million to Aspinall’s Casino.
Following casino policy, Aspinall’s called al-Zayat’s bank to confirm that the
check could clear and allowed al-Zayat to gamble the $2 million in funds. But
after gambling and leaving the casino, al-Zayat demanded that his bank stop
payment on the check.
Throughout the course of the court case, it became clear that the land and
online casinos have some fault depending on the circumstances. In this case
Aspinall’s allowed al-Zayat to continue gambling at the casino as a way to
recoup some of the lost funds.
To conclude the case though al-Zayat was not required to pay Aspinall’s the $2
million in gambled funds, but at the same time, al-Zayat’s case against
Aspinall’s for more than $10 million was also dismissed. Most who are familiar
with the case agree that while the law was applied correctly in this case, there
is a certain sense of injustice in it all because the land and online casinos
come out the losers in this ruling. |
