What are They Thinking?
The Kentucky officials seem to be setting themselves up for ridicule this week
with continued progress on the legislation that attempts to seize the domain
names of more than 140 online casinos that allegedly operate in the US and
Kentucky gambling markets. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has been widely
criticized in online casino gambling industry because of the sheer scope and
impropriety of the proposed legislation. A Kentucky court is currently holding
out on a judgment on whether the seizures are legal – most in the industry are
issuing a resounding “no.”
While the courts are still out on the proposed legislation many in the online
casino gambling industry have carefully examined the list of affected gambling
sites – some of the sites are invalid and/or have been out of the market for
months now! The entire process seems to have come out of left field and most
speculate that there is little chance that the proposed Kentucky legislation
will hold up in the Federal courts (assuming that it is even able to pass in the
Kentucky courts).
Some are calling this whole debacle a complete farce – the lack of thorough
research, time, and effort put into the proposed legislation is very apparent.
Many online casinos in Europe have asserted nonchalance concerning the issue,
merely noting that their domains were registered in the UK and therefore
untouchable by the US courts and state governments.
The farcical quality of the whole process was highlighted as well by the
seemingly nonsensical and basic assertions from a handful of Kentucky
politicians who have remarked on the issue. |
