PPA Seeking Protection
The Poker Players Alliance has long upheld that there are very inherent
differences between the online casino gambling industry and internet based poker
gambling. The PPA has sought legislation that would legalize internet gambling
in the states based on the fact that internet poker is a skilled based game with
the element of chance as only a secondary concern. And although the PPA has also
supported legislation at the federal level that would legalize online casinos
operating in a regulated fashion in the US, the PPA is, at the root of it all,
most concerned with legalizing internet poker. Recent negotiations in Kentucky
about impending legislation that would confiscate the domain names of several
internet poker gambling sites has brought about criticism from the PPA.
John Pappas is the Executive Director at the PPA and he recently released a
statement on the current Kentucky situation that succinctly outlined the
Alliance’s position on Kentucky’s proposed anti-online casino gambling
legislation. Pappas noted, "The actions by the state of Kentucky are not only
extreme, but groundless in that it can be clearly proven that poker is indeed a
game of skill and not chance and thereby poker Web sites should not be part of
the state's action."
This sentiment is in keeping with the PPA’s primary argument that online casinos
and internet poker sites are two separate entities deserving of different rules
and regulations. The current Kentucky situation is a cluster and the Franklin
Circuit Court Judge has extended the judgment until the 7th of October in light
of all of the legal action and arguments in support of the rights of the online
gambling industry.
