Intervening for Propriety
The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has struck again this week, and this
time it affects one of the giants in the online casino gambling industry –
PokerStars. PokerStars is the topped ranked internet poker gambling site in the
world; the company boasts extremely high daily and simultaneous gambling rates.
And as the fall season kicks off PokerStars will have to pull a poster
advertisement that featured land and online casino poker gambling ace Daniel
Negreanu. Negreanu’s advertisement allegedly contained some taboo implications
that the ASA has determined inappropriate for a gambling ad.
PokerStars has fought the judgment from the ASA to no avail – the ASA contends
that the phrase used on the poster implies that online casino poker gambling can
improve a person’s self-image. The wording on the bottom of the poster quotes
Negreanu as saying “Poker is a sport of courage, conviction and confidence.” The
ad shows Negreanu in hockey gear and with a hockey stick – not at the poker
tables. This is a delineating fact according to PokerStars. The company argues
that the wording in no way implies or suggests that an interested gambler could
find those attributes at the online casinos, but instead implies that those that
succeed already have those characteristics.
The ASA apparently doesn’t see the ad in the same light and stood by the
decision that it defied some of the advertising clauses in place in the UK.
PokerStars must pull the use of the ad from the public and cease further use of
the poker advertisement. |
