Privatizing the Turkish Lotto
Online casinos and gambling companies from all over the world have begun to
announce interest in the announcement that Turkey was privatizing the state
lottery system. With that announcement some of the largest gambling companies
and groups in the international market have announced they will submit a bid for
the position. The fact is, the Turkish lottery market has the potential to
really produce a lot of revenue for the company that wins the bid and online
casino and lottery groups looking to diversify markets are eyeing this market
hungrily.
Notable among the groups vying for the Turkish lotto is OPAP, the Greek land and
online casino gambling monopoly. OPAP has been involved in a case with the
European Commission for the past couple of years because of the company’s
ongoing monopoly in the Greek market. The EU stands on principles of free trade
of goods and services between EU member-states and has thusly pressured land and
online casino gambling monopolies like OPAP to open their markets to
competition. Now that the Greek market is beginning to open to competition, OPAP
is looking to expand its business into other European gambling markets.
According to information provided by the CEO at OPAP the company has already
begun to build a partnership arrangement with a Turkish group, Dogus. The
partnerships with current Turkish facing gambling related companies could go a
long way toward securing OPAP the lotto deal. CEO Christos Hadjiemmanouil,
briefly commented on how he perceives OPAP’s chances of winning the deal. He
notes, "The climate we met was positive ... there was a friendly mood and open
doors,” but at the same time, there are several other notable international
lotto groups vying for the job. |
