Moved Again!
The case involving the Kentucky courts and the international online casino
gambling industry has just taken another turn – the Franklin Circuit Court Judge
has once again moved the judgment on the case to another day. The Kentucky
government is pushing legislation that would seize more than 140 domain names
from international online casinos and force internet gambling companies out of
the Kentucky gambling market on the threat that non-compliance would mean the
closure of the domain name. The legislation is highly controversial and has
brought forth hefty criticism from the international online casino gambling
market as well as the domestic companies that would be affected by the
legislation.
Predictions earlier in the week have actually proved true – the proceedings have
turned into a cluster and companies representing the online casinos have sent
lawyers and protests to the courts. Some of the arguments are based upon the
argument of international trade agreements as well as the argument that
forfeiture of domain names registered outside of the US are not within the
control of the US government, and certainly not the Kentucky government.
Others representing the Internet as an entity assert that this proposed
legislation goes far beyond the online casinos and instead would set a dangerous
precedence for the global internet industry. In light of the extremely chaotic
environment surrounding the proceedings the judge delayed passing a judgment and
instead gave all parties involved continuation until October 7, 2008 to submit
objections and support arguments relevant to the case. The online casino
gambling industry will now have to wait more than a week before arguments
resume. |
