Lobbying for Online Casinos
Some in the United States are really pushing hard for legislation that would
neutralize the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) – a piece of
controversial legislation that has angered the international online casino
gambling industry and has the potential to weaken the power of the World Trade
Organization. The Poker Players Alliance is a lobbying group that was
specifically formed in response to the UIGEA and focuses on lobbying Congress
for legislation that would legalize internet poker in the country. The PPA
specifically supports legislation proposed by Barney Frank that would legalize,
license, and regulate the online casino gambling industry – this includes
internet poker gambling in the states.
The PPA reached a million members earlier this year – a goal that the company
set because of the effect that one million individuals can have on Congress.
Before the PPA’s lobbying efforts very few politicians and members of Congress
were even aware of the international situation surrounding the online casino
gambling industry. Thanks to the PPA’s efforts a growing number of US
politicians are beginning to support legislation that would not only bring more
tax revenue into the US, but would also bring the country into rights with the
rest of the world.
Reports released just this month indicate that the PPA spent a whopping $283,000
in the second quarter of the year on lobbying funds. The lobbying process in the
US is highly regulated and fully transparent and the PPA’s efforts have wholly
centered on educating politicians as to the current state of online casino
gambling in the US as well as alternative legislative possibilities – name those
proposed by Congressman Barney Frank. |
