On the Hunt?
Politics is a rough business and it the business gets dicey when you mix
lobbying for online casinos with the upcoming presidential election. The press
alighted this week with the news that the Democratic Vice Presidential pick Joe
Biden has one weak spot in his readiness for office – his son. Biden’s son,
Hunter Biden is a Washington lobbyist and while that is no major issue for the
presidential race, the news that Hunter’s firm is representing the online casino
gambling industry has caused quite a stir. The media attention over the past
several weeks has been strongly focused on the Republican VP pick, Sarah Palin,
and the news of Hunter’s connection to the gambling industry has finally put the
spotlight back on the Democrats – even if the spotlight is debatably negative.
Neither the Democratic nor the Republican platforms outright support the online
casino gambling industry – both presidential candidates have equivocated on the
issue. Gambling at offshore online casinos has become a hot point of contention
for many in Washington – the issue is polarizing as some democrats in Congress
as pushing for licensing and regulation of the industry while many republicans
seek to uphold the flawed and controversial UIGEA.
To that end though, Hunter Biden has put his father right in the mix with the
news that Hunter’s firm represents the law firm that in turn represents Party
Gaming. Hunter is a partner in the Oldaker, Biden and Belair firm. It turns out
that the fact that Hunter lobbies for online gambling could have a negative
effect on his father’s ambitions for the White House. |
