Fighting the Monopolies
The Bwin online casino gambling and betting group has vowed to continue pressing
the German government on the internet gambling issue until an acceptable
resolution is found. The German government has a ban in place to block foreign
online casinos from accessing the German market – this piece of protectionist
German legislation is in place despite pressure from the European Commission for
an open European internet gambling industry. EU policies demand that all EU
member-states allow the free movement of trades and services – Germany though is
one of several companies with protectionist legislation in place that supports a
state run gambling monopoly.
The Commission is firm in the assertion that online casino gambling monopolies
violate EU policies and has been in the process of negotiating with the nearly
dozen countries with monopolies in place. The negotiations with Germany stalled
earlier this year when the German government implemented a new piece of
protectionist legislation in January despite warnings from the Commission. The
next step for the Commission to ensure compliance with EU policies will likely
be a recommendation to the European Court of Justice for a trial.
As for Bwin, the gambling group has stood firm by its commitment to overturn the
German ban on foreign online casinos and betting companies accessing German
gamblers. A Cologne Court set the groups efforts back a tad with the refusal to
overturn the German ban. But Bwin asserts that the company will push the issue
all the way through the federal courts until the illegal ban is overturned and
German operates in an open online gambling market. |
