They Want Online Casinos or Exemption
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Act (UIGEA) and all of the objections surrounding
the act have taken a backseat in the past several months as the upcoming
presidential elections set the discussion. Although media coverage of objections
to the Act, which bans transactions between offshore online casinos and US
financial institutions, has taken a back seat, that doesn’t mean that there
haven’t been developments. The iMEGA case is still in development and according
iMEGA’s legal team they have obtained the aid of one of the top lawyers in the
states to help with the case. iMEGA’s legal team is shaping up to prove a
formidable team of top professionals on internet law, online casino gambling,
and the justice system in general.
iMEGA announced that Stephen A. Saltzburg has joined the legal team and will not
only assist the team in developing a case, but will also take the case all the
way to trial. Saltzburg is both a law professor at George Washington University
and a top lawyer in Washington DC. The iMEGA case is one its way to the appeal
case in what is becoming an international debacle on the part of the US
government. The US government continues to stand by the flawed UIGEA and the
Act’s attempts to not only block foreign online casinos from the market, but
also prosecute gambling companies that are currently active and were active
prior to the UIGEA’s passage in October of 2006.
The international online casino gambling industry has supported iMEGA’s attempts
to seek reprieve from the reaches of the UIGEA – at least until the Act has
released the enforcement regulations. The courts on the other hand have
acknowledged that iMEGA has some validity in the Associations concerns but was
unable to pass a favorable ruling – that is why the case is now moving to the US
3rd Circuit Court of Appeals. |
