Cyber Crime Update
Important to note for the international online casino gambling industry is the
fact that the UK’s National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU)is no longer operating the
NHTCU.org site. A German company has bought the domain name and is now suing the
site to sell holiday packages to Germany. The NHTCU was a huge success while the
Unit was in operation and was specifically formed to protect the cyber world
from hackers, fraudsters, and the like. The online casinos were also under the
protection of the NHTCU because of the ease with which criminals could launder
money through internet gambling in the early days of the industry.
The new owners of the site though have connection with neither the online casino
gambling industry nor the NHTCU. In actuality, the reason that the domain was up
for sale is the fact that the NHTCU has been officially disbanded and now the
Serious Organized Crime Unit (SOCA) handles all of the high-tech cyber crimes.
The news is very significant for the IT industry considering that this once
powerful organization’s site is now used for those looking to vacation in
Germany.
Some in the online casino and internet industries are wary of why any company
selling German holidays would pay the premium prices for the NHTCU.org domain
name. Some are already speculating that it is for nefarious purposes and could
potentially aim at duping visitors to the NHTCU domain for informational
purposes. According to SOCA though and others the site is malware free and
completely legitimate. |
