The US online casino gambling industry is just not the place to look for
leniency, just ask Gary Kaplan. Kaplan took center stage in reports last week
that included the announcement that Kaplan was seeking release from jail on the
grounds that he has been facing trial for too long. Specifically, Kaplan’s
lawyers used the Speedy Trial legislation that indicates that any person on
trial in the US has the right to a speedy trial…and as Kaplan and former founder
and CEO David Carruthers have been under arrest and house arrest for roughly two
years, there were certainly grounds for the case. But the US Department of
Justice threw a wrench into those plans with the addition of 22 more felony
charges added on to Kaplan’s indictment for his involvement in illegal online
casino sportsbetting gambling.
Speculation is rampant that the additional indictment comes as a result of the
arrest and cooperation of several individuals previously associated with the
BetonSports online gambling company. William Hernan Lenis, Will Lenis, and Manny
Lenis (all family) were arrested in St. Lois for their involvement in the US
online casino sportsbetting operation. The media and industry insiders speculate
that the members of the Lenis family struck a plea deal with the prosecutors as
a way to lessen their charges.
The DoJ has really been on a warpath of sorts against the online gambling
industry since the UIGEA came into effect and foreign CEOs and executives at
internet casinos industry operating or having operated in the US market are
steering clear of US soil in fear of facing sealed arrest warrants once on US
soil. |
