Accepting Online Casinos?
The Swedish internet gambling market is well known throughout the international
online casino gambling industry because of the countries blatant defiance of
European Union policies that declare that all EU member-states will allow the
free movement of goods and services with other member-states. Sweden has
persisted over the past several years to close off the gambling market and block
EU licensed online casinos from operating in the Swedish gambling and betting
market. But as pressure mounts in the EU to put a stop to all monopolies still
practicing there is speculation that the Swedish government has abandoned the
fight when it comes to blocking sportsbetting companies that compete with the
Svenske Spel monopoly.
Sportsbetting though is the only sector of the internet gambling industry that
may gain access to the Swedish market at this point because the Swedish
government deems sportsbetting a lower risk form of gambling than gambling at
the online casinos and poker sites. Despite the fact that many online casinos
are contesting the continued ban on internet gambling sites the announcement
that new sportsbetting legislation is in the process is welcomed news not only
for the international land and internet betting industry, but for the European
Commission as well.
The EC has consistently pressured the Swedish government to open the market and
has even resulted to threatening Sweden with action form the European Court of
Justice if the country doesn’t comply. With ECJ action looming over the country
it is more pressing than ever that Sweden indicate that the government is
actively attempting to contemporize online gambling and betting legislation. |
