Laying Out a Timeline
The industry news has fallen silent in recent months concerning the negotiations
between the US Trade Representatives and the island nation of Antigua and
Barbuda. Over the past several months the USTRs and Antiguan officials have
protracted negotiations several times in hopes that lengthening the deadline
would help facilitate a resolution between the two countries. Unfortunately,
months have now passed since the initial deadline and according to recent
statements out of Antigua the two countries aren’t a whole lot closer to a
resolution – this means that further action and arbitration from the World Trade
Organization is a possibility.
The two parties were expected to come to a resolution in early June – that date
was postponed and representatives from both sides indicated that the parties
were close to a resolution and the date had been extended. Several months later
all of those extensions seemed for naught and the online casino gambling
industry has waited in suspense. The Antiguan Finance Minister, Dr. Errol Cort,
announced that Antiguan officials would finalize the discussions with the US
Trade Representatives and come out with a definitive plan of action in the
coming weeks.
Part of the timeline means that the online casinos and those affected by the
US’s internet gambling policy will have to wait even longer before a resolution
is announced. The latest information on the subject indicates that the Antiguan
officials will agree to one more extension of the negotiation deadline and at
that point, if both parties have not come to agreement, Antigua will take the
issue back to the WTO for arbitration – the US will not likely fare well if the
WTO is left to decide the appropriate compensation for Antigua.
