Options on the Table
The negotiations between the United States Trade Representatives and Antiguan
government officials have been unending in the recent weeks. The two countries
seem almost incapable of a compromise and although one more extension is in the
works, it is very likely that Antigua will have to resort to other means before
a resolution is found. Dr. Errol Cort, the Finance Minister of Antigua, laid out
that the country is considering three different avenues at this point. There is
a definite need for change because what is going on right now is certainly not
working toward a resolution and the Antiguan economy is still struggling to
overcome the losses from two years without revenue from the online casinos.
Cort’s three outlined options will hopefully bring the two countries into accord
– as for the United States two of the options are definitely favorable over the
other one. The US’s have never stood up to scrutiny by the World Trade
Organization over the past several years. The US ban on offshore online casinos
has been one of the most unfavorable policies as of late to affect the
international internet gambling industry. The first of the options on the table
is to take the issue back to the WTO and ask for arbitration.
The second option on the table is to simply resolve the online casino gambling
issue as it stands on the table right now. There are areas that are unfavorable
for both sides and the Antiguan Finance Minister has been hoping for a better
resolution, but at the same time, the negotiations have been unending and the
online gambling industry would find relief at having and end in site. The last
option is to wait for the new US president to take office and then hope for
better negotiations with the new government. |
