Public Health Model a Possibility
Underage gambling is a real problem around the world and unfortunately, no
matter how much the online casino gambling industry tries to float around the
subject the issue cropped up in the past decade with the advent of the internet
gambling industry. Underage gamblers now only need a computer and a credit card
at their fingertips and even the most stringent controls at the online casinos
cannot keep out all of the children and youth. Now, this is not to say that land
gambling does not play a role, because that is an issue as well, but in the eyes
of the world the increases in underage and problem gambling lies squarely on the
shoulders of the internet casinos – fair or not that is the nature of the beast.
The UK Gambling Commission has recently adopted the underage gambling issue as
the Commission’s new cause and is looking for ways to lessen and eliminate
underage gambling. Tighter controls at the online casinos will actually only
have a minor impact on the increasing number of underage gamblers. The
Commission’s main other choice in this situation is a public health model of
education and support for the public. The online casinos cannot remain solely to
blame for the current global and UK situation where youth have access to land
and internet gambling. The crisis situation extends to the parents of these
underage gamblers as well.
The public health model would have the Commission fund a national campaign that
has three tiers to reduce risk of underage land and online casino gambling. The
three areas include preventative steps to keep children from accessing the
sites, education for parents and youth about gambling, and harm reduction
efforts to neutralize exposure to internet gambling and prevent gambling
behaviors from becoming abusive behaviors. |
