Pony Up the Online Casino Sites
The Kentucky legislative situation has caused quite a bit of controversy and
confusion within the state in the past several weeks. The newly proposed
legislation to seize the domain names of online casino gambling sites as a way
to enforce an internet gambling ban in the state has a slew of opponents and the
controversy around the world is heating up. The presiding judge in the case,
Judge Wingate, authorized the temporary seizure of domain names and is now
waiting for both sides to submit arguments for debate that the Judge can then
examine before making his ruling. Initial impressions of the situation do not
look awfully positive and the judge at one point made a specific note to the
domain name registrars objecting to the legislation that they may have to
release the names of their clients.
The online casino gambling industry is in a very peculiar position right now as
the registrars fight for the right to control the domain names of domestic and
foreign sites licensed through their company without revealing the names of the
sites they hold. Federal US legislation has banned online casinos from operating
in the US market and the executives at sites that continue to offer internet
gambling services to US gamblers likely have sealed arrest warrants that come
into effect if the executives step foot on US soil.
The fact that representatives from the online casinos cannot step on US soil
themselves makes this situation all the trickier and could prove sticky if Judge
Wingate does in fact force the companies to “pony up and say who these people
are.” Much of the opposition to the proposed Kentucky legislation is on
principle alone and those companies associated with the controversial US online
gambling industry are reticent to start listing names.
