Nitty-Gritty of Offshore Ban: 1
Newcomers to the online casino gambling industry may read all of this new
related to the US internet gambling policies and the controversial UIGEA. But if
you’re new to the industry you might be confused as to what exactly the policy
entails and how it effects the global internet gambling industry. The UIGEA has
gained attention internationally because it has a very negative affect on
offshore online casinos… many of these impacted sites were licensed and operate
in the EU – this has meant some strained relations between the two countries.
Additionally, the UIGEA came into affect very suddenly and many international
sites were forced to withdraw suddenly.
Basically the situation looks like this: Senator Kyl of Arizona was one of the
many members of the Senate partaking in the shaping and passage of the Safe Port
Act back in 2006. The Safe Port Act was a piece of must pass legislation that
absolutely needed to pass through the Senate before the session ended. Just as
the Safe Port Act was finding acceptance among the politicians, Senator Kyl and
others added an 11th hour addition to the Act – one that many of the voting
politicians did not even bother to read.
That addition was the Safe Port Act was the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act (UIGEA). The UIGEA passed into law and within days the offshore
online casino gambling sites with a base in the US market were forced to
immediately shut down their US operations and bail out of the market. |
