Mathematics Shows It's a Skill
The debate wages on all over the world about the skill versus chance element of
poker gambling. This debate is particularly pertinent when you consider the
online casino gambling industry – at this point any country banning internet
gambling has also included internet poker in the ban. But poker enthusiasts, and
now a recognized mathematician on the subject, have vehemently asserted that
while poker has an element of chance to it, that the game is dominated by skill
and therefore deserves carve-outs in place to protect the game from banning. The
latest flair in this ongoing debate occurred in Holland and the Dutch media is
alight with the news.
The media coverage centers on the assertions of Ben van der Genugten, a Dutch
professor with a specialization in probability and statistics. van der Genugten
is now pressing the Dutch Supreme Court to reconsider the rulings in place that
classify internet poker within the definition of online casino gambling. van der
Genugten is well recognized as a specialist on the subject by the Dutch courts
and is often called in as an expert in trials. But now that van der Genugten is
looking to change the country’s online casino gambling policy the courts are
siding with case precedence.
van der Genugten strongly argues that he and Borm developed a formula that
clearly indicates that poker is a skill based game over chance. He also argues
that the formula indicates that poker is even more of a skill based game than
Fantasy Sports Leagues, and yet the leagues have specific carve-outs in place. |
