Musings on Longevity: 3
Some recent developments in the industry are actually a bit reassuring –
although the online casino gambling industry critics are never quite appeased, a
Canadian gambling group has taken it upon themselves to fund responsible
gambling initiatives and programs. The Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation announced
it had earmarked Cdn $8 million toward the responsible gaming programs. One of
the key efforts with the money is to develop and fund a site that is
specifically targeted at gamblers who may be a have problem gambling tendencies.
The Corporation announced that the new site was the first of its kind in the
online casino gambling industry – this is pretty encouraging if you ask me.
Some of the most prominent online casinos and gambling brands in the UK have
demonstrated some very poor responsible gaming efforts – the companies do
everything necessary to comply with the UK’s legislation and regulations of the
industry – but there is definitely a bare bones approach to the whole situation.
Some UK organizations are worried that this hesitancy and lack of commitment
from the country’s major online casino gambling brands does not bode for well
for the future of the current legislation.
The UK and Canadian online casino gambling industries paint two very different
pictures of the industry. “Responsible gaming” is the new industry buzz word
right now and it will be interesting to see how the global gambling industry
unties to tackle problem gambling – I suspect that it will be somewhere in the
middle of these two extremes and will take into account the global nature of the
industry – prohibition of the industry is likely a thing of the past no matter
how hard countries like the US attempt to ban the industry. |
