Likelihood of Repeal
The online casino gambling industry views the upcoming US presidential election
as one of the largest chances that the industry has of ensuring the repeal of
the highly controversial Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). The
UIGEA was passed two years ago and has brought a huge amount of problems to the
US in terms of international relationships with countries such as Antigua and
the 27 nations that make up the European Union.
The Bush Administration stands firmly behind the UIGEA and has yet to allow any
sort of revisions to the flawed legislations despite requests from the US
financial services sector. The only bright side is the fact that the US is
coming upon an administration change and those in the industry predict that, if
elected, Barack Obama is the most likely to implement changes to existing online
casino gambling legislation.
As the election is less than a week away at this point, those in the online
casino gambling industry have thoroughly analyzed both candidates policies. That
means an analysis of both the Republican and Democratic platforms, statements
from both candidates, and other indicators.
According to the results of the analysis, Anthony Cabot, a lawyer in Las Vegas,
concludes that Obama is the better vote – at least in terms of supporting the
online casinos. The UIGEA criminalizes internet gambling for the internet
casinos and while not punishing the US players, the current drafting of the
legislation puts the onus of implementation squarely on the shoulders of the US
banking industry.
