Gambling Friend Leaves the Industry
The UK online casino gambling industry is losing a true supporter this month as
Peter Mandelson is leaving the position as EU delegate investigating the US
internet gambling policies and will instead accept a position in the UK cabinet.
The US’s highly controversial gambling policies related to foreign online
casinos has made headlines and the EU dispatched a delegation twice now with the
intention of investigating the US legislation. The US officials though, members
of Congress and the US Trade Representatives have been very off-putting in their
welcome of the delegation and straight-out disrespectful in many instances.
Mandelson has led the delegation thus far in the investigation process and has
fairly represented the UK’s online casino gambling industry in the proceedings
and negotiations.
The UK’s Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has given Mandelson recognition of a
sorts for his efforts on behalf of the online casino gambling industry with the
new appointment. A position in the UK cabinet is a step up from his current
duties as a part of the EU delegation.
As for what Mandelson has done over the past several months in leading the US
policy investigation, Mandelson and the delegation went to the US and issued a
questionnaire to US politicians in representation of the interests of the Remote
Gaming Association – which in turn represents most of the prominent online
casinos in the EU.
The RGA (rightly) claims that the US policy regarding foreign online casinos
specifically works against the foreign companies and additionally claims that
enforcement of the controversial UIGEA has been limited to foreign gambling
companies at this point. |
