Goodbye to Internet Revenue
Toto Lotto is just one of the many companies all over Europe with a gripe about
the German anti-online casino gambling legislation that took effect in January
of this year. Toto Lotto is the state lottery of Lower Saxony; the company has
previously enjoyed a pretty free reign when it came to internet based
advertising as a way to entice German lottery gamblers. A recent court ruling
though has changed all of that and now the foreign online casino gambling
companies seem to have a supporter on the inside as it would seem. Toto Lotto
will undoubtedly feel the revenue affects from banning internet based lottery
advertising but because of Germany’s protectionist and anti-online casino
gambling approach right now there is little hope that the legislation will
change immediately.
The German legislation banning forms of online casino gambling and internet
gambling advertisements came as a shock to much of Europe because of Germany’s
negotiations with the European Commission regarding the nation’s monopolistic
internet gambling legislation. The legislation was upheld in a Lower Saxony
court and Toto Lotto is not able to appeal the verdict.
The problem with the whole situation though comes down to the fact that Toto
Lotto’s questionable advertisement that breaks the rules of the anti-online
casino gambling legislation involved an ad on the company’s own site. And to
make the situation just a bit more absurd, the courts all over Germany are
having trouble interpreting the legislation and have disagreed on the
appropriateness of the online gambling ban in light of German laws concerning
freedom of services, not to mention the ongoing concerns and debate coming from
the European Commission on the legislation. |
