Gamcare's Problem Online Casino Gambling Results
The latest news out of the UK indicates that problem gambling has increased and
the liberalization of the UK land and online casino gambling industry is taking
the blame for the increase. The UK has some very specific research studies in
place and monitors the levels of problem gambling in the UK closely. The latest
information though comes out of the UK’s problem gambling assistance
organization – Gamecare. Gamcare has operated in the UK market for many years
and the company’s latest report indicates that the number of problem gamblers
seeking help has increased as much as 25 percent over the past two years. The
results though, it is important to note, reflect the number of problem gamblers
seeking help – this actually does not directly correlate to the number of
problem land and online casino gamblers present in the UK.
Gamcare’s statistics have led many critics of the online casino gambling
industry to petition the government for tighter regulations and controls on the
gambling industry. Specifically, many have broached the topic to the UK Culture
Secretary, Andy Burnham, as well as Jeremy Hunt, the Shadow Culture Secretary.
The announcement that nearly 38,000 problem gamblers called Gamecare for help
has some invariably led to criticism of the industry – many wonder why the
government is doing so little to prevent the spread of problem gambling and
instead protecting the online gambling industry.
In addition to gambling at the online casinos, gamblers have increased access to
betting at fixed-odds betting terminals, the Prime Minister approved the
building of 16 new land casinos, and reports over the past several months
indicate that funding for the Responsibility in Gaming Trust (RIGT) is less than
anticipated. |
