Challenging Authority
Ladbrokes is left with only a couple of options now that an Oslo court sided
with the existing ruling from the Norwegian courts. Ladbrokes offers a range of
services throughout the UK and Europe – everything from online casino gambling
to land and internet betting. The dispute arose several years ago when the
Norwegian government denied Ladbrokes a license to operate gambling in the
country. Under the conventions of the European Union and with free trade between
member-states in mind, Ladbrokes took the Norwegian authorities to the courts to
demand a gambling license in the country. The case has taken some time to come
to a ruling, but in the end the Oslo courts agreed that the Norwegian
authorities had the right to block Ladbrokes from offering gambling services in
the country.
The Oslo court also added a bit of insult to injury for Ladbrokes and demanded
that the Ladbrokes land and online casino gambling group pay the court costs in
the case – roughly Euro 130,000. There is really only option for further action
from Ladbrokes, the company can appeal the case to the higher courts and
continue to seek gambling licensing in Norway.
One of the big bones of contention for Ladbrokes is the fact that Norway
operates an essential monopoly in the country through Norske Tipping. Norske
Tipping is one of the only companies allowed to offer any gambling services in
Scandinavia and some of the online casino gambling companies licensed out of EU
member-states widely contest the countries that continue to not only operate,
but to defend state-run gambling monopolies that block foreign online gambling
companies.
