Upcoming Prevalence Study

Problem gambling at the land and online casinos is an issue facing any country that allows any forms of gambling – be it the national lottery or internet or even land gambling. The United Kingdom is currently very focused on studying the prevalence of problem gambling in the country as a means to insuring that the more liberal regulations pertaining to land and online casinos do not create a surge in problem gambling levels. The UK Gambling Commission has already conducted two of these British Gambling Prevalence Studies as a baseline comparison for future studies. The next Prevalence Study is scheduled for 2010, and some in the land and online casinos gambling industry are skeptical that the findings will site well with the Commission.

The Prevalence Study is specifically designed to give the Gambling Commission information on the prevalence of problem and addictive gamblers. Last years’ study, in 2007, was not used as a means of critiquing the land and online casinos gambling industries, but rather as the foundation for comparison. Now the government has firm data indicating the levels of problem gambling in the country, and if the 2010 levels show a significant increase, there will certainly be some rapid changes.

Before last years’ study, the only previous study for comparison was conducted in 1999 – the only problem that some have with that study is that it does not properly take into consideration the surge in online casinos gambling in the country during that period.

The 2010 Prevalence study is already in the planning stages and the Gambling Commission has requested that experts in the land and online casinos gambling industry specifically related to problem gambling research should attend a discussion in June.
