Land Venues Struggling
Legislation in the UK is very favorable to the online casinos gambling industry,
but many of the land venues are sending out desperate cries for help from the
government. Since new regulations and taxing took effect nearly a year ago, the
land casinos have struggled to keep their doors open. The 2005 Gambling Act,
which took effect in September of 2007, placed some heavy burdens on the land
venues, and so far seven casinos have closed their doors. The UK online casinos
gambling industry on the other hand is thriving under the new regulations, a
fact that causes even more distress for the land casinos. The state of land
gambling in the UK has gotten so bad for the venues that the British Casino
Association (BCA) has now stepped in and is beginning to mediate the issue with
the government.
The real concern for the land venues is the fact that the new Prime Minister has
authorized the licensing of 16 new casinos for the UK – that means 16 new larger
gambling venues that will have unfair advantages over the smaller venues
currently in operation. The online casinos gambling industry operates completely
separately from the land venues, so there is little concern about the affect on
the internet gambling sites.
The Chairman of the BCA, Lady Cobham, is hoping to negotiate with the government
new terms for the existing land casinos – even if the tax regime remains in
place, perhaps the exiting land venues could relocate to less competitive areas.
Many of the 16 new casinos will be licensed to operate within close proximity to
existing venues. Cobham remarks, “Unless we work with the government to
ameliorate these effects, the closures are going to continue.” The forced
closure of existing land venues in a time when land and online casinos gambling
is flourishing all over the world would be a shame. |
