Resurrecting Flawed Bill
Speculation in Massachusetts abounds now that the land and online casinos
gambling bill that was soundly defeated in the Massachusetts House may make a
comeback according to some reports. The fact of the matter is that there was
intense opposition to Governor Deval Patrick’s first drafting of the gambling
bill, but after a few alterations, the bill could very well return to the House
for discussions and debate. A lot of the intense scrutiny over the bill was
created by the online casinos gambling industry, in addition to anti-casino
groups protesting the sheer amount of land gambling that would be brought into
the state by the proposed bill. The online gambling industry protested a small
clause in the bill that would make internet gambling a felony offense for the
offender – an arguably overly harsh and severe punishment that is only found in
one other U.S. state, Washington State.
Recent reports in the media indicate that Governor Patrick has noted that there
is a distinct possibility that he will bring the bill back into consideration.
He commented on the state of land and online casinos gambling in Massachusetts,
"There's a lot of interest in it, and issues that die in one session don't die a
permanent death. They tend to come back over time."
Well there is no doubting that the online casinos gambling industry (including
the PPA) will be watching closely for Governor Patrick’s next move on this
issue. Beyond the internet gambling industry though, others are speculating that
one other individual, House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, will have a few choice
words on the issue if Governor Patrick does once again push the issue. Some are
speculating that DiMasi plans to leave his position as House Speakers soon, and
that that is the primary reason for Governor Patrick’s renewed attentions to the
previously failed land and online gambling bill. |
