Liberalization of the Greek Gambling Market
Greece is one of the several EU member states facing European Court of Justice
proceedings if the country does not come up with some more inclusive land and
online casino gambling legislation. It has been a long road for the Greek
government – from a much criticized and laughed-about electronic gambling ban to
monopolistic land gambling policies, the Greek government’s gambling woes may
finally have and end in sight. The recent media reports indicate that the Greek
government is coming to terms with the European Commission on both online casino
gambling legislation as well as the land gambling monopoly.
Gone are the days for the Greek citizens that they have to fear the government
ripping them out of internet cafés and placing them under arrest for taking part
in electronic gaming – even video gaming! The online casino gambling issue is
fairly new for many state governments because the activity has only been around
for about a decade, but the 2002 Greek legislation was an over reaction to the
growing prevalence of computer-based gaming and gambling. The law brought much
ridicule to the government, but since that 2002 law, the government has finally
