Gamblers are Liable for Prosecution
In Washington State, online casinos gambling and poker players are liable to
face jail time and a hefty fine if they are caught gambling on the internet from
the privacy of their own homes. Washington is actually the only state at this
point that punishes the actual gamblers themselves – the federal legislation on
the issue does not target individual gamblers. And by the end of the week, the
Washington State courts will hear lawyer Lee Rousso’s argument that the current
Washington laws that make online casinos gambling a Class C felony actually
violate federal legislation.
Rousso is a representative for the powerful lobbying group, the Poker Players
Alliance, and with the support of the PPA, Rousso will bring his case before the
courts this coming Thursday. The court date has been long-delayed thanks to the
arguments and technicalities from the state. But the delays are over, the Rousso
will have his day in court to challenge the controversial legislation that
unfairly targets online casinos gambling.
Dina Rossi, a current candidate running for the governorship is actually right
on the same page as Rousso, the PPA, and others in criticizing the legislation
as far to harsh to fit the crime. Rossi noted on the online casinos gambling
issue, "Well, it seems really excessive in the penalties they put forward,
because if you really look at this, what they’ve done is that they’ve made it a
felony. And it would clearly ruin someone’s life if they have a felony - it’s up
to five years in prison.” That is simply ridiculous as is the fact other Class C
felonies include “possessing child pornography, threatening the governor, or
torturing an animal.”
There is no way of knowing if Rousso’s attempts in court will successfully
strike down this draconian legislation, but it is reassuring to know that if
Rossi wins the governorship, there is a good chance that Rossi will makes
strides to alter the harsh online casino gambling penalties. |
