There's No Money Involved
The Oregon Department of Human Services has announced the specifics on the
state’s online casino gambling addictions in young gamblers. And while the
statistics for real-money online gambling are quite positive, the state
officials are concerned with statistics on free internet gambling. Online Casino
gambling in the United States is largely banned because of the UIGEA, which
means that underage and youth gamblers are mostly unable to even access the
internet casinos, let alone gamble. But the free gambling figures are alarming
because they indicate that youth gamblers are developing gambling as a pastime –
they have casinos essentially in the bedrooms observe some officials.
As for the specific figures, real money gambling at the online casinos comes in
at just one percent of the Oregon teens participating in the pastime. This
figure is quite impressive and an indication that the state has at least one
area under control. The perceived problems with free online gambling though
poses problems that are more difficult to address since teenage gamblers are not
breaking the law and neither are the free gambling sites. At this point, as many
as 94,659 teenagers from age 12-17 are gambling at free online casino gambling
sites. That is a huge 30 percent of Oregon teens – a figure that has the Head of
Problem Gambling Services at the DHS concerned about the long-term effect on
youth gamblers.
The free online casino gambling figures will only continue to rise as the
pastime grows in popularity and is spread through word-of-mouth. To that end,
prevention specialists note that they will not attempt to stop internet based
gambling, but rather to educate the youth through school curriculum, pamphlets,
and others measures in development throughout the summer months. |
