How Does This Happen?
An Australian land casino went public with the admission that the company lost
an AUS $100,000 chip. Crown Casino is a land gambling venue in Melbourne that
naturally not only offers the lower value chips like $1, $5, $25 chips and so
on, but also the higher value chips that cater to the high rollers. In this
case, the police and casino itself consider the loss of the chip as done by a
company employee, but at the same time, there is no additional information or
leads from the case. This is an example of a problem that the online casinos
sites can often circumvent by having everything controlled by computer systems –
not that that is infallible either though as the Absolute Poker online gambling
scandal indicated.
So as much as chips have been eliminated at the online casinos, the land
gambling venues still have to contend with the very real possibility that the
large value chips will be targeted by thieves. The police have questioned
upwards of 50 Crown employees, but have yet to uncover any leads. As for where
Crown Casino stands in all of this hullabaloo, Crown spokesperson Gary O’Neill
commented, “It is an on going investigation by police, we will leave it up to
them. We are co-operating and continue to co-operate with the police. It is a
police investigation, which is still open.”
The land and online casinos gambling industry will watch the developments of
this case closely in the coming months. The police are at the beginning of their
investigation even though the theft occurred in January 2008. The casino opted
to keep the matter private and conduct their own investigation into the matter
before actually reporting the theft to the police not long ago. |
