Regulating Greece's Online Casinos
Dare we hope that Greece is coming closer to ending the controversial state-run
online casinos gambling monopoly? The European Commission, and specifically
Commissioner Charlie McCreevy, are really beginning to pressure the EU
member-states in violation of EU policy to make the needed changes to come into
compliance. According to previous reports, the Greek government has not
responded favorably to the negotiations with the Commission, but now that the
Commission is sending final notices to the violating countries, many are taking
note that Commissioner McCreevy is serious about ending the EU state-run online
casinos gambling monopolies.
Greece is one of the roughly ten EU member-states that operates an online
casinos gambling monopoly, but recent reports indicate that next week’s meeting
between Commissioner McCreevy and the Economic Minister in Greece, George
Alogoskoufis, could lead to new legislation and regulations in the nation. OPAP
is the current monopoly in the state, and the regulations on financial
institutions only allow for the state-run monopoly to offer betting and online
casinos gambling.
As a way to avoid prosecution from the European Court of Justice, some media
sources have noted that the Greek government may very well negotiate new
legislation with the European Commission that involves regulation of the Greek
online casinos gambling industry rather than the banning of foreign gambling
companies. This latest turn of opinion from Greece comes at the same time that
several other nations in violation of EU policy are also planning to affect a
positive change that will bring them into compliance. |
