A Glance at the Market

The European Commission’s negotiations and efforts in the EU online casino gambling industry are far from over, but at the same time, the EU gambling climate is becoming increasingly liberal as more of the EU member-states begin to alter the currently restrictive gambling policies. The Chief Executive at the eCOGRA, Andrew Beveridge, recently commented on not only the changes to the European online casino gambling industry, but also the importance or European gambling companies to keep up the their standards. The current state-run monopolies consistently argue that online gambling monopolies are safer than a regulated and inclusive gambling market – if all internet gambling companies adhere to the strict guidelines of the eGAP operational standards for the industry then the state governments will have no persuasive argument.

The current state of online casino gambling in the EU has 11 member-states in negotiations with the Commission. Of these 11, the majority of the nations have agreed to begin altering current restrictive policies in some regard: Denmark, Italy, France, Greece, Poland, Spain, and Sweden. But there are four countries still refusing to alter monopolistic gambling policies: Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, and Norway. These nations have either refused to even negotiate with the Commission or have newly implemented protectionist gambling policies related to the online casinos.

As far as maintaining standards in the online casino gambling industry , Beveridge comments, "The indications are sufficiently strong to warrant serious consideration by online gambling operators of their positioning in the industry, particularly with regard to superior and integrity driven operational standards and a commitment to professionalism, player protection and responsible gambling." The online gambling companies a key and integral part to convincing state governments that opening the restrictive market is as safe as operating as their restrictive monopolies.
