Fine Tuning Online Casino Monopoly
The Swedish government seems to be circling the question of how much does the
state monopoly Svenske Spel have to give up before the country’s online casino
gambling legislation is in line with the minimum EU policy requirements? Sweden
currently operates an entirely exclusive state-run internet gambling monopoly,
and despite years of requests from the European Commission to end the monopoly,
the Swedish government asserts refused to comply. But with the threat of facing
the European Court of Justice (ECJ) becomes inevitable, the Swedish government
and operators of the Svenske Spel online casinos and betting sites may privatize
some aspects of the company.
The Swedish newspaper, Local.se has reported that Svenske Spel is considering
privatizing some of the company’s assets – specifically the forms of online
casino gambling that are less addictive and therefore pose less threat to
Swedish gamblers. Some industry analysts speculate that Svenske Spel is
considering selling off parts of the company as a strategy to delay facing the
ECJ. Over the past several months many of the nations operating online casino
monopolies, but the Swedish government’s refusal to even negotiate with the
Commission put Sweden as a prime target for further and imminent ECJ action.
The privatization reports are largely unconfirmed at this point and there is no
indication as to whether this is merely a proposed plan, and a strategy already
in the process of implementation. Either way, the fact that the Swedish
government and Svenske Spel are making some efforts toward ending the monopoly
is a positive step toward the nation allowing foreign online casinos regulated
access to the Swedish gambling market. |
