Use Online Casinos to Fund Culture
European gambling monopolies are quickly becoming passé, even in the most ardent
and pro-monopoly nations. Sweden has long held one of the most lucrative and
well-structured online casinos gambling monopolies in the European Union,
effectively blocking and banning all gambling transaction that did not go
through the state-run Svenske Spel gambling monopoly. The Swedish government has
stood firmly against any negotiations and requests by the European Commission to
open the gambling market to include foreign gambling companies.
The Commission contends that monopolies within EU member-states violate the
policies and tenants of the European Union – nations running monopolies though
argue that monopolies create more protection for the online casinos gamblers.
But even though the Swedish government has traditionally opposed all attempts to
open the nation’s gambling market, the nation’s Moderate Party is stressing that
new inclusive online gambling policies and an emphasis on responsible gambling
could generate needed revenue for the state coffers.
The Moderate Party’s Culture Committee contend that licensing the foreign online
casinos could generate funds that could then be used to support the nation’s
athletic and culture programs. The Committee’s statement on the new proposal
noted, "By ditching Svenska Spel’s monopoly and charging a fee to both Swedish
and foreign companies to participate in Sweden’s gaming market, the state could
raise enough revenue to finance both athletics and culture.”
The Committees paper on concerning the online casinos gambling issue highlights
opportunities for the Swedish government to not only come into compliance with
the Commission’s request and EU policy, but to also really bring in revenue that
would support currently underfunded areas. |
