New Amendments for Italy
The Italian government has made huge strides in terms of coming into compliance
with European Union free trade policies concerning the nation’s online casinos
gambling and betting activities. And even as Italy actively works to draft new
regulations for the internet gambling and betting industry, the European
Commission and the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) are critical
of the newly proposed regulations that still have elements of policy that are
inconsistent with EU free trade policies. This is a large area of concern for
the Commission as nearly a dozen EU member-states are currently out of
compliance with policy as a result of the online casinos gambling issue.
Italy’s newly drafted and released regulations are a step in the right direction
according to many in the online casinos gambling and betting industry, but there
are still some kinks that the Commission pointed out that should be fixed before
the legislation actually fully passes through the Italian government. The
Secretary General for the EGBA, Sigrid Ligné, commented on the Commission’s
formal comments on the new online casinos gambling and betting regulations. He
notes, “The Commission’s decision suggests that even if Italy has demonstrated a
genuine improvement in bringing its legislation into line with EU law, the
Italian remote gaming legislation still contains measures that don’t serve a
clear legitimate public order interest.”
Some of the elements of the draft that are causing concern involve the extent
and severity of the restrictions that would put in place on the types of online
casinos betting and gambling games. The Commission and others made formally
responses to the drafted regulations in the anticipation that the Italian
government will make needed changes before the regulations are passed into law. |
