Change Will Take Time
The Players Poker Alliance is in the fight for the long haul according to PPA
Chairman Alfonse D’Amato. The fact is that no matter how much support bills like
Congressman Barney Frank’s Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA)
at this point, there is still a long way to go before the United States will
once again enjoy open online casinos gambling activities. The current ban on
internet gambling will take at least a year to negate, overturn, or neutralize,
and the fact that this is an election year will actually slow down the process –
less policy actually gets passed during an election year. And another reason the
licensing and regulation of the online casinos gambling industry will take time
is due to the fact that the issue isn’t very high on many politician’s agendas,
and some are still relatively uninformed of all that has happened in the U.S.
internet gambling industry over the past year.
According to D’Amato, “It's going to take a couple of years.” That doesn’t mean
that there hasn’t been any progress on the issues in the past year and a half.
In fact the opposite is true. Congressman Frank is slowly gaining momentum for
his bill – he is up to 46 co-sponsors on his bill, the mentioned IGREA. There
are actually several other bills on the table that also have support from
politicians and Congressman. Many politicians admit that they are largely
uninformed on the issue, and are support Shelley Berkley’s call for a one-year
study on online casinos gambling – everything from it’s potential growth in the
U.S. to the effects of internet gambling on addicted players, criminal activity,
and the feasibility of regulating the industry in the United States.
Berkley’s bill by and large has the most support, and if that bill passes,
that’s automatically one more year that the internet gambling is forced to focus
on gaining support until the study is concluded. Frank has announced a hearing
in the House in the coming weeks and he will use that opportunity to voice
concerns over the proposed UIGEA regulations and how ineffective these
regulations will be at limiting online casino gambling. This is still just a
beginning step though and the issue will come up many more times in the coming
months.
