Developments in Swedish Online Casino Gambling
The Swedish government has spent significant time and effort protecting the
state-run internet gambling monopoly, but the Swedish media has received a
reprieve from government harassment over advertising for various online casino
gambling companies. Two Swedish newspaper took their issues with the Swedish
internet gambling monopoly to the courts – and they won! The fact is, the
Swedish courts were forced to rule in favor of the newspapers because the
current online casinos gambling monopoly is in possible violation of European
Union trade policies and protections.
The European Commission has negotiated with the Swedish government over the past
several months encouraging the country to open up the current online casinos
gambling monopoly to better comply with free-trade between EU member state
policies in effect. The Swedish gambling monopoly, Svenske Spel, not only
dominates the online casinos gambling industry, but the company sued and
threatened two Swedish newspapers that were running internet gambling
advertising for foreign internet gambling operators.
The two Swedish newspapers challenging the country’s online casino gambling
monopoly activities won last week in the Swedish Court of Appeals and any
criminal allegations against the newspapers have been dropped. The two papers,
Aftonbladet and Expressen took the issue as far as possible in protest of the
Swedish legislation that limits the type of online and paper advertising that
that the media are allowed to support. The Swedish Court of Appeals found that
the Swedish restrictions may contradict EU regulations and policies. That means
a small victory in the fight to open up the Swedish online gambling market to
foreign gambling operators. |
