U.S. Sports Support Online Gambling Ban
All of the lobbying companies in the United States are required to disclose how
much money and which companies hired the lobbying firms – and for which
political agenda. For the Sports Leagues in the U.S. tops on the list of
lobbying issues is the maintenance of the online casinos gambling ban – the
Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). GambleCraft has previously
reported a number of gambling related companies’ lobbying budgets, included were
the American Gaming Association (representing the land gambling industry), the
PPA (online casinos poker interests), and other interest groups. But this is the
first breakdown on the four major U.S. sports leagues and the issues they felt
were worth millions.
The four leagues lobbying spending covered the Major League Baseball, National
Hockey League, National Football League, and the National Basketball
Association. These four organizations spend lobbying monies in the following
areas: maintaining the online casinos gambling ban in the U.S., steroids, and
cable programming. These were the main focus areas, and collectively the four
organizations spent more than $2.6 million in lobbying funds.
The sports organizations largely support the online casinos gambling ban because
the ban has carve-outs which benefit Fantasy Sports Leagues and other more niche
forms of gambling. The Fantasy Sports Leagues do not currently function as
internet gambling, and they organizations would like to keep it that way. The
executive vice president of public affairs for the NFL, Joe Browne, remarked at
the end of the summit: “We don’t want to be used as a betting vehicle. We don’t
want our games to be used that way. And if we can control it, we’ll work hard to
do it.” |
