New Restrictions for Land Tournament
Considering that the World Series of Poker is a land based gambling tournament
(and one of the largest at that) there are certain rules and restrictions in
place that never have to be considered in the world of online casinos gambling.
The WSOP event in Las Vegas is just months away and Harrah’s Entertainment
company has released a new and more formal set of rules than in years past –
perhaps to tone down some of the hullaballoo that surrounds the event when the
hands get heated and players are playing for hundreds of thousands in winnings.
The intensity of a one of the largest land poker tournaments in the world really
just can’t compare to a more laidback online casino poker tourney.
The new rules though reflect the fact that players are in a land venue, with
other players close by, and with increased abilities to cheat during tourney
play – these are factors that don’t come into effect in the online casinos
gambling tournaments.
A few of the rules that have been added or updated include a detailed
explanation of exactly when and where a poker gambler may use cell phones and
wireless devices. This is intended to protect the fact that the WSOP is
broadcast live on television simultaneous with the tournament play, so the new
rule eliminates the ability of players to cheat through online casino and
internet access or SMS texting of information.
And on the lighter side (though we are sure Harrah’s is serious) a new rule
notes that “Excessive celebration through extended theatrics, inappropriate
behavior, or physical actions, gestures, or conduct may be subject to penalty.
Any player that engages a member of the tournament staff during the celebration
or utilizes any property of Harrah’s will be penalized in accordance with Rules
No. 31 and/or 51. Harrah’s property includes but is not limited to chairs,
tournament tables, and stanchions.” That is perhaps to protect that facility
from the often exuberant and celebratory players.
These new rules take effect for the 2008 WSOP event this summer and more
information and a breakdown of all of the rule changes can be found online at
the WSOP official site.
