Recommended for Rejection
It seems as though there is very little chance that Governor Deval Patrick’s
proposed land and online casinos related bill will pass through the House of
Representatives later this week. The Massachusetts legislators were put to vote
on the issue amidst a protest rally outside of the building. The legislators
naturally do not have the ability to deny the passing of the proposed bill, but
rather voted on a recommendation for Governor Patrick’s proposed bill. And as
many predicted considering the high controversy over the land casinos gambling
bill (and an anti-online casinos gambling clause), the legislature sent the bill
to the House with a rejection recommendation.
The legislative vote took considerable effort and many were not surprised that
the bill didn’t pass after the outcry at the public forum on Tuesday. Online
casinos proponents, organizations supporting a Casino-Free Massachusetts, and
others all came out to voice concerns should the proposal pass through to the
House with a positive recommendation.
Another prominent figure speaking out against the land and online casinos
gambling related bill was Salvatore DiMasi, the Speaker of the House. DiMasi was
adamant in asserting that the legislators should not support Governor Patrick’s
bill. Even Governor Patrick was present at the public hearing and his speech on
the benefits of the proposal were not enough to sway the tide of public opinion.
Basically, the consensus centered on the fact that although the proposed bill
would bring in more tax revenue to the State, there were still fundamental flaws
in the intent and implementation. Who knows, maybe the next draft will err of
the side of caution when attempting to ban online casinos. |
