Probably No Land Casinos for Mass.
Governor Patrick has faced extensive and heated debate surrounding the land
casinos gambling bill he has supported and pushed for the past six months. The
bill has been controversial on every level really – from the number of grossly
overstated short and long term jobs that Governor Patrick estimated to the
revenue that the land casinos would generate – and even the little clause in
Patrick’s proposal that would criminalize online casinos gambling. In the face
of all of the criticism, Patrick has noted that while his proposal is like to be
defeated as early as next week, what he is really looking to do is generate
debate and discussion on how to strengthen his proposal for reconsideration in
the next legislative session.
The Massachusetts media, as well as some of Governor Patrick’s fiercest
opponents (DiMasi and online casinos gambling interest groups) have been very
vocal in appealing to the upcoming House hearing to nip this proposal in the bud
quickly. And it seems as though Patrick is prepared for the proposal to be
defeated, he notes, "I have no illusions about the plans in the House for this
legislation. I'm simply asking that an open debate begin, rather than end,
today."
Just as with any controversial debate, proponents for bringing land casinos (and
criminalizing online casinos gambling) and opponents have extensively rallied in
the past week to drive their point home as the bill goes up for vote in the
House in the very near future. Patrick’s top critic in the government is
certainly DiMasi, he comments, "After six months of debate on this bill, I
believe the evidence is not there, the case has not been made and time is
running out." As for how he will vote when the proposal is brought to the table
– "Right now, my answer is no," he comments. |
