Monopoly in the Netherlands Continues
The European market is a tough sell at this point for many online casinos
gambling and betting companies because the EU has had difficulty in stopping
nearly a dozen nations from passing restrictive and protective legislation
blocking certain gambling activities in favor of a state gambling monopoly. This
is where Unibet, an online casinos betting company based out of London, England,
has run into some problems. Because of the way that the EU has set up trade
between the member-states, Unibet has the authority to offer internet betting
and gambling activities throughout the Netherlands if the nation has any other
forms of internet gambling – but the Dutch government has ruled yet again in
favor of the nation’s state-monopoly.
The Dutch government has faced letters of concern and warnings from the European
Commission (as have nine other EU nations with restrictive online casinos
gambling regulations) but despite the strengthening action from the Commission,
a Dutch appeals court confirmed an earlier ruling that found Unibet in violation
of Dutch online casinos gambling and betting regulations.
The fact of the matter comes down to the fact that De Lotto is the primary
betting monopoly in the Netherlands and the company filed suit against Betfair
for advertising and accepting bets in the Netherlands. But that’s not what
upsets the online casinos gambling industry, but rather the fact that Betfair
faced punitive fines as a result of the court case. Betfair took the case to an
Appeals court, and now that the appeals court has confirmed the earlier ruling –
which is clearly in violation of EU free-trade policies regarding the online
casinos gambling industry. This means that the issue could find its way to an
even higher court as Unibet protests the Dutch protectionist attitude which has
propelled the case thus far. |
