Libel is Expensive
There are so many acquisitions, takeovers, and business deals conducted
everyday, all over the world. And that is certainly the case with the land and
online casinos gambling industry. Due to the nature of business these gambling
companies are frequently in discussions and acquisition discussions. And that is
certainly true for the owner of the Las Vegas Sands Casino, Sheldon Adelson. The
Sands is one of the biggest land casinos in the United States and also has
operations in the United Kingdom. Due to the nature of the British media though,
Adelson’s moves have been securitized and criticized intensely in what has
resulted in a libel case that settled for a very large chuck of money in favor
of Adelson.
The British media may be learning the lesson the hard way now that Adelson’s
case is the second case in the past several weeks that finds libel damages based
on what was written in the country’s newspapers. Adelson won the case against
the Daily Mail on claims that comments in the newspaper that Adelson used
"cut-throat, ruthless and despicable business practices" in running his land and
online casinos gambling company were libelous.
Although there is no way to find out the extent of what the court awarded
Adelson, Adelson’s lawyers commented that the London High Court’s award was
“very substantial.
This case involving the land and online casinos gambling industry, in addition
to last weeks announcement that The McCanns (parents of missing little girl
Madeleine McCann) won GBP 550,000 in a libel lawsuit against the British media.
What this means for the media is that while the courts do not want to cause a
chilling effect on free speech, the newspapers and media should have due course
to adequately fact check – particularly when going up against high profile
casino companies. |
